It’s that time of year… a great time to look back and reflect on how the year has tracked, what’s happened, highlights, lowlights, achievements, and why.
For some of us, it’s about gratitude, for others achievement, satisfaction, significance etc. In the past, every year, we’d write a family newsletter about how our year had been.
It occurred to me one day, it could be perceived as a big brag fest, it could be perceived as a way of connecting, staying in touch, for some it could be perceived as a frustration, cause “wow, it’s now December and despite best intentions, my christmas cards although bought and sitting on the coffee table are not yet written”.
However we choose to perceive a situation, is just that, one perspective only. So refecting back this year, the biggest growth, I’ve made and I’ve seen reflected in clients and those around me, is, if and when we change our perspective and look at things differently, they are always different, perhaps better, perhaps worse, perhaps lighter, brighter, darker, greener, whiter, different.
And with that in mind, the timely reminder for the coming festive season, is to remember, it is not the event itself, it is the meaning we give it. If you want to change the meaning, you can, you have the dial and the ability to change it. Not for others, we can only change our own meaning, and give it a different slant.
We can influence others, yet each person has to be responsible to make their own meaning.
For 2015, reflecting on what has been for this year, the new year will be all about more influence, and helping others to create new meanings, when they’re ready and wanting too.
