At a recent school dinner the principal spoke about the numbers. Specifically the number of books the kids used to borrow from the library. They then did a rebuild, a re-arrangement, they relocated the books and created a whole new plan – all focused on getting the number of books borrowed to increase. It did by 300%. And not only were they being borrowed, they were being read. They changed their thinking to align precisely with what these students needed to be enticed to borrow, read and learn. It was a phenomenal improvement.
How do you measure and track growth and improvement in your workplace? Whether an individual, team or the business? Most leaders always focus on the traditional numbers for measuring performance. Revenue growth, profit, cashflow, ebit, return on capital etc or the individual or team KPI’s that need to be achieved, be that calls made, missed calls, appointments booked, SLAM’s done etc.
What other ways do you measure growth and improvement?
Is there a decrease in staff turnover, improvement in retention, are the safety numbers being achieved, do you have particular environmental markers or targets?
Think outside the square.
Have a rethink about what results would we really want to be able to measure?
For example… communication or accountability! Two of the most flagged improvements leaders mention in our leadership questionnaire.
How would you know communication or accountability was improving?
What would be results? And in order to achieve those results what would you see, hear and experience?
No ‘no shows’ at meetings, whole team participation, some particular participants speaking up, all cameras on, a full cookie jar with feedback suggestions, those difficult conversations being had, instead of avoided. There are so many fabulous ways to measure some of the specific key capabilities that really drive business performance.
It has nothing to do with money in the bank and everything to do with how profitable and successful a business is.
At The Art of Extraordinary, with our clients we have people measures. We track PQ scores % and we profile specific leadership capabilities and align them with specific individual, team or business goals to define the plan and desired results.
If there are significant capability gaps within the business, then the business goals will be a challenge. Regardless of industry environment, economic conditions etc.
Do you define capabilities and bite-sized goals so that each individual has their own personalised plan to grow and improve?
We have two amazing tools for measuring human performance, growth and improvement.
