Recently a friend hopped up on stage and did something she’s never done before. I congratulated her on being brave. She said to me “yes, probably one of the bravest things I’ve done getting up on stage to be judged by a panel of judges. Terrifying but pretty much the ultimate facing my fears. Possibly quite stupid but I can’t believe I had the guts to do it (and to smile and pretend to have boundless confidence at the same time). It felt good to do something that challenged me and made me feel nervous!!”
We all exist with some level of ‘fear’ within us, some of us can feel it, see it, hear it or it’s something we say to ourselves. Some of us get on with it anyway and get up on stage, others of us listen to it and stay seated in the audience, and some never even make it out of the house, because the fear is too great. It’s too loud and noisy clanging around in our head or restricting and debilitating the body.
Recently facing some of my own hurdles, I’ve been astounded at the noise in my head. Much much louder than normal, particularly when getting closer to reaching a major goal. I hear my ‘fear’, I also felt it recently, with my stomach in knots and churning. It was incredible, the strength of it and the noise, the sound, telling me, ‘oh, it would be so much easier to go and hide my head under the pillow instead of continuing, it’s so hard’, then there was lots of moaning, groaning etc. It took me by surprise, how noisy it was. I chose to acknowledge it and chatted to my other half, then had a laugh about it and kept moving forward.
With two young kids we talk a lot about animals… we frequently play Katy Perrys’ ROAR song and it’s a favourite, because no matter what, no matter when the urge to run and hide comes, I let her music take over and remind myself to be brave. Not to be brave for myself, well yes it is a little, let’s be honest, for my family and myself, however it’s more importantly for a lot of other beautiful people out there. Because I know, in my heart, every single time I beat one of those fears of my own, when I step up on stage, write a post, kick a goal or do something big (or small for that matter), it will inspire, help and encourage another person. That is my ultimate weapon in defeating, abating, acknowledging and overcoming the ‘fear’ thing. And it is a thing, even progressing, building, evolving my business, new ‘fears’ come manifested in different ways, the noise is still there, it simply sounds different. So we can choose to listen to it, we can absolutely stay tucked up at home, head under the pillow or feet up on the lounge or we can choose to turn the volume down, change the channel and get up, get out and get on with it.
Being Brave. What do you choose?
